Your Chinese Supply Chain: Complexities and Challenges

This is a virtual program produced by the US-China Series in conjunction with the U.S. China Business Council and the Washington State China Relations Council.

One in five global exports come from China. Doubling Vietnam’s export capability would hardly put a dent in this. This epitomizes the size and scale of the logistical problem facing US manufacturers. In this era, where the pressure to diversify supply chains is coming from customers, the C-Suite, and from the nation’s capital, the practicalities of transitioning from a dependency on China are often overlooked. China is a supply chain powerhouse because it remains the most efficient manufacturing hub for multiple industries. Divesting will hurt competitiveness in the near term.

This forum, “Your Chinese Supply Chain: Complexities and Challenges”, will focus on the real-world implications of any transition and the issues that the current debate fails to address. Are we ignoring the notion that many supply chains have migrated from exports to become suppliers for the burgeoning Chinese middle class? Have we thought enough about the logistical difficulties of shifting to neighboring countries? Is it economically feasible to bring low end manufacturing back to the United States, with its affluent workforce and aging demographic? Does the US workforce have the skill sets to compete in elite manufacturing?

This virtual program will take a deep dive into the issues of specific sectors: 5G, Agriculture, Apparel, Automotive, Chemicals, Semiconductors and the Medical supply chain. We will address the cross currents of national security concerns, economic efficiency, the efficacy of the current policy regime, and address constructive alternatives.
